For some international and out-of-state students, Hamline will be home over the Thanksgiving weekend. Dining options, however, are limited, leaving many students with the task of finding alternative options for their holiday meal.
According to Gayle Hanson, director of Dining Services, meals will be served at Sorin through lunch on the 26th, Sorin will then be closed through Monday Dec. 1.
The C-Store reopens Nov. 30 but Sorin, Klas and the Hub will reopen at their normal operating hours the following Monday, she said.
The office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs (MISA) will not be hosting a Thanksgiving meal due to low turnout for past Thanksgiving events.
Kevin Barta, Interim Coordinator of International Student Support for MISA, said that "many students go to Thanksgiving dinner with U.S. friends that they make, or leave the area to travel."
Though nothing official is being sponsored by MISA, Robert Kuo, president of the International Student Organization (ISO), plans on celebrating Thanksgiving with other international students on Saturday.
Kuo said that the ISO would be buying a ready-baked chicken for Saturday night, simply because it would be too difficult and impractical to cook a turkey. Three to four students will be providing side dishes, celebrating a belated Thanksgiving in Manor lounge.
On Thursday, Vietnamese students will be making a traditional meal by combining several different foods in a large pot. Promoting a sense of community, students will share a meal from the food cooked in the pot.
Not all students staying at the university for Thanksgiving are international students, though. Javi Aguirre, a first-year from San Diego, Calif., plans on looking for other students in the dorms that are staying at school over the holiday. He has been invited to spend Thanksgiving dinner with several friends, but has not made any definitive plans.
