D-1 Sacred Heart bests Piper women

Division I Sacred Heart swept the Hamline women's hockey team this weekend in Bridgeport, Conn., winning 4-1 and 4-2.
Hamline held a 2-0 advantage in the first period of Sunday's game thanks to two power play goals from junior Melanie Leveille, but Sacred Heart got three goals in the third period to earn a come-from-behind victory over the upset-minded Pipers.
Leveille's first goal was set up on the power play at 12:49 in the opening period by sophomore Alli Miller and senior Kate Raasch.
Just over five minutes later, she snuck another past Pioneer goalie Amanda Nagel-that one off a pass from junior Mallory Steele.
Goalie Andria Pinkerton stopped 41 Sacred Heart shots in the losing effort.
On Saturday, it was Sacred Heart that gained an early advantage.
Hamline out-shot Sacred Heart early, but it was the Pioneers who were able to find the back of the net.
Whitney Dziama started the scoring for Sacred Heart, and then a shorthanded goal in the final minute of the first period extended the Pioneer lead to 2-0.
Senior Cortney Hansen cut the lead to one with a goal at 2:53 in the second period, but two more Pioneer goals sealed their victory.
Goalie Amanda Plumm recorded 34 saves for Hamline.
The Pipers (4-4, 0-2 MIAC) will return to Drake Arena on Friday, Dec. 5, when they host St. Mary's at 7:15 p.m.
