Jayaraj, who said he has been writing at The Gig since it first opened, decided that it would be the perfect venue for poetry readings he and a group of Hamline MFA graduates had been involved in. Jayaraj's friend, who initially started the monthly gatherings, planned to stop them after the summer came to a close.

"It stopped and people were like, so what do we do now?" Jayaraj said.

Jayaraj decided to take over planning the program, which the group had named "Barbaric Yawp" after a line in Walt Whitman's poem, "Song of Myself."

Jayaraj said he turned to the management of The Gig and asked if they would be willing to host the monthly event.

"I just figured - why not here?" Jayaraj said.

The Gig hosted the first Barbaric Yawp slam on Sunday, Nov. 8. Jayaraj said he anticipated between 20-30 people to appear, either to read their own original work or to share the writings of an author they liked. He said readers could choose from poetry, fiction or creative non-fiction.

Jayaraj will be presenting Barbaric Yawp again on Dec. 6, from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.. Anyone interested can call The Gig at 651-644-3421.
