Winning four of their last five games, including victories over the top two teams in the conference, the Hamline women's basketball team is gaining momentum as they remain in contention for the last play-off berth.
To begin the month of February, the Pipers beat Concordia Moorhead 75-63 and followed up with wins over Bethel 45-40, Gustavus 69-65 and St. Mary's 75-58.
Notable wins over both Gustavus and Concordia are especially significant because the two teams are currently ranked one and three in the MIAC respectively and were ranked five and six in the West Regional as of Feb. 11.
Not only are the women breaking away from their 3-7 month of January, they are also breaking records.
In their win against MIAC top team Gustavus on Feb. 6, the Piper women earned a new MIAC record for field goal shooting percentage in a game. They shot 70.3 percent from the field, beating the previous record set by Augsburg in 1984 of 70.0 percent.
Their recent performance has not gone unnoticed by the conference.
Junior center Mary Wilkowski was named MIAC women's basketball Athlete of the Week on Feb. 8. She shot 60 percent of the field for the week and came close to averaging a double-double with 16.3 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game.
Though the team currently ranks sixth in the MIAC, they are listed significantly higher in categories of the conference statistics.
According to the MIAC basketball report released Feb. 11, the Pipers are second in both three-point field goal percentages (.357) and assists (15.16 avg/g). They rank fourth in scoring offense (68.4 avg/g), field goal percentage on defense (.390) and free throw percentage (.732).
A few of the women have distinguished themselves individually in the current MIAC rankings as well.
Wilkowski ranks second in rebounding (8.6 avg/g), third in scoring (16.3 avg/g), fourth in blocked shots (1.05 avg/g) and fifth in field goal percentage (.508).
