Hula hooping, a retro pastime, might not be thought of as a common workout, but it is a new activity to Hamline and an inventive way to move your body.

"The hula hoop is a good workout because it's fun, so people stick to it," said Colleen Clish, Assistant Registrar at the law school.

Clish leads an intramural group of hula hoopers every Wednesday at noon in the Student Center Ballroom.

The group hoops, does tricks and exercises to music during their sessions.

Clish explained that right now the group, which is an official intramural sport, is about one month old.

The group currently has six members, but they are looking for more people to join.

The activity is open to faculty, staff and students.

"We would love to have more people because the space is big, the music is loud and we always have extra hoops," Clish said.

Clish recognized the possibility of some being wary to try hooping because it is so unusual.

"Everyone is a beginner at some point in the process, so everyone looks silly," she said.

Clish also mentioned there is a wide range of ways to hula hoop, from traditional around-the-waist to trying tricks.

"You can spin it around your thighs or your head," she said. "When I started, I hit myself in the head a lot."

Local resident Paige Wagner makes custom hoops for the participants. Because of her love for hoops, she has been dubbed DJ Hoopster. Through her website (www.djhoopster.com), Wagner has pushed the aerobic quality as well as the pure enjoyment of hula hooping.

"It's infectious," she said.

Clish said she lost five pounds from the activity, and the venue provides significant space for hoop and body movement.

"In the ballroom you can really move around, and you can make it as aerobic as you want. It's up to you," she said.

As an intramural, Clish said hula hooping is a great idea because it can be as leisurely or as intense as the person makes it.

Mary Street, an administrative assistant at the law school's financial aid office, agreed with her assessment.

You are totally in good company. I've been hooping for years, sadly still a little paunchy... can't imagine what I'd look like had I not been hooping. (Continued…)
